Familiar Distraction

Is there such a thing?

When I was in college, I lived at home, but that doesn't mean that wasn't a constant ruckus going on in the house. Having my bedroom door shut to work on assignments didn't always cut out all the chaos from my brother's room next door. I learned to tune everything out with headsets and music that I'd listen to over and over again. Eventually, I would hear that and nothing else around me so I could concentrate.

I can listen to the same music or song a countless number of times...well, countless before my iPodski tells me how many times I've listened to a paricular song. (Like Will Dailey's "Rise" - - At this moment the count is 463. Scary.) Once, when I was in high school, I discovered Billy Joel's 'The Stranger'. About the same time the senior class decided to go camping in Payson for a weekend. Of course, I brought Billy along for the ride. He never made it home, though. A guy named Eddie took it out of the "boom box" (remember those?) and chucked it into the river. I guess I played it just a little too much. Buh-bye, Billy!

Anyway, I still use this method today, especially when I'm at work. I'm fortunate enough not to get many phone calls during the day and my team communicates through instant message (we're all over the country) so I don't miss anything. The only bad thing is, people will walk by my open office door and say HI and I never know it. But seriously, the Bose headsets are a little hard to miss so I don't feel so terribly bad.

So crank up the iPod, kick back and relax with your favorite tunes. It works for anything you want to focus on...not just algorithms and spelling bees.

Have fun and thanks for stopping by!!
